What modern living condition would inspire the dream of a sugar coated world? The alley, refuge to those who seek and desire something to soften the rough edges of modern life, epitomizes the modern Hansel and Gretel story. Perhaps the story of The Little Matchstick Girl may come to mind; those left in the cold peering in upon comfortable suppers, licking the windows for the hope of a taste. This project is a collage of the alley’s of Vancouver’s East Hastings, contrasted with the historical Gas Town store fronts. It is an edible interpretation of modern living, though not modernist, in downtown Vancouver.
